GENERAL INFORMATION
Emporiatrics, or Travel Medicine, deals with the prevention of diseases that can
occur when traveling. We provide immunizations, prescriptions, and advice
for the traveler, either local, regional or international.
As a Travel Medicine specialist, Dr.
Winton is equipped to diagnose and treat unusual illnesses caused by parasites
not found in the United States. Dr. Winton has access to a wide network of
travel clinics worldwide that assures he can provide the best and most current
information on the prevention and treatment of rare illnesses.
Your travel agents will rightfully
tell you that no immunizations are required for many countries, but often it is
prudent to make sure you are up to date on immunizations. We can tailor your
immunizations to the type of trip you plan, based on destination and length of
stay.
The CDC Web site (http://www.cdc.gov/travel/index.htm
) has general travel information for you. We can focus on your particular
trip requirements.
CHOLERA
Cholera vaccine is no longer recommended, as the US vaccine is ineffective for
the cholera seen in the world today. Some countries require a dose anyway.
HEPATITIS A
"Gamma globulin" or Immune Serum Globulin (ISG) was formerly
recommended for prevention of Hepatitis A in travelers, but this has now been
replaced by the Hepatitis A vaccine (Havrix or Vaqta). You should obtain
this at least 3 weeks prior to travel, and get a booster 6 - 12 months later.
This should provide protection from Hepatitis A for life.
TETANUS
If it has been over ten years since your last tetanus booster, make sure you are
up to date. Commonly, we use the Td (adult tetanus and diphtheria) booster for
adults.
TYPHOID
Typhoid vaccine is now oral, consisting of a series of 4 capsules to swallow
prior to travel.
YELLOW FEVER
We are certified by the World Health
Organization to provide yellow fever vaccine, one of the few places in Missouri
to do so.
